About HalalLens

Learn about HalalLens - your trusted companion for halal food verification using advanced AI and OCR technology.

The Problem

Shopping for halal food outside Muslim-majority countries is frustrating. You pick up a product, flip it over, and face an ingredient list full of codes and chemical names.

Is E471 halal? What about "natural flavoring"? Which animal is that gelatin from?

What HalalLens Does

Take a photo of any ingredient list. Our system reads the text, identifies ingredients and E-codes, and checks them against our database.

Simple. No switching between apps. No manual searching.

Important Limitations

This is a tool, not a fatwa.

HalalLens helps identify ingredients—it doesn't replace scholarly guidance.

Source ambiguity is common.

Many ingredients (E471, gelatin, "natural flavoring") can come from plant or animal sources. Without manufacturer confirmation, we can't know for certain.

We mark uncertainty.

If the source isn't clear, we flag it as "doubtful" or "check source"—not halal.

Regional variations exist.

The same E-code may have different sources in different countries.

Most entries are auto-extracted. Verification with scholarly sources is ongoing.

How Verification Works

Most ingredient data is auto-extracted using AI from various sources. We're actively working to verify entries with proper scholarly sources, but this takes time.

You can help: If you spot errors or have verified information about an ingredient's source, contribute corrections. Community input makes HalalLens better for everyone.

Manufacturer questions: We can help you contact manufacturers to verify sources, but we rely on community contributors to keep information current.

Our Approach

Conservative defaults

Uncertain = doubtful, not halal. We err on the side of caution.

Transparent reasoning

See why an ingredient has a certain status, not just a color code.

Scholarly differences acknowledged

Where Islamic opinions vary, we note it. Your madhab, your decision.

What We're Not

  • Not a halal certification body
  • Not a replacement for consulting scholars on significant questions
  • Not infallible—always verify critical decisions independently

Community-Driven

HalalLens is built by developers and community members who faced the same grocery store frustrations you do.

It grows through community feedback and contributions. If you find it useful, spread the word. If you spot mistakes, help us fix them.

Nurul Isma

HalalLens was born in a grocery store aisle—phone in one hand, restless kids in the other, trying to decode whether E471 was safe. After too many abandoned shopping trips, I decided to build the tool I wished existed.
