Hanbali scholars apply the Quranic and prophetic principle that what is doubtful should be avoided (hadith of Nu'man ibn Bashir, Bukhari/Muslim). They resist extending istihalah beyond the textually established examples (wine vinegar) to industrial chemical processing. For any flavor enhancer whose source is unverified, the Hanbali ruling is to treat it as doubtful and avoid it if alternatives exist. Pork-derived E631 is categorically haram. - "Flavor enhancers" on a label is not one ingredient. The ambiguity itself is a red flag. Contact the manufacturer to identify which specific additive(s) are used and their source.
