Condensed milk is a concentrated dairy ingredient, usually made by removing part of the water from milk and, in the common sweetened form, adding a large amount of sugar. It is widely used in desserts, confectionery, coffee/tea, fillings, and some cosmetic milk-based formulations. Food-science references describe sweetened condensed milk as milk that is clarified, heated, evaporated, and then sweetened to preserve it. Some products sold in the broader condensed/evaporated/filling category may include stabilizers, vitamins, flavorings, vegetable fat blends, or other functional ingredients. Maliki School: The baseline is also permissibility for pure milk from lawful animals. Still, Maliki analysis does not remove the need to verify contamination, najasah exposure, or added ingredients whose source is not clear.
Shafi'i School: More restrictive caution is warranted. While pure milk itself is not the issue, Shafi'i fiqh is typically less willing to overlook impurity/contact concerns and doubtful animal-derived additives. If emulsifiers, gelatin/collagen derivatives, flavor carriers, or processing aids are unspecified, the safer classification is mushbooh unless halal certification or a clean ingredient list removes the doubt.
Hanbali School: Hanbali reasoning also supports caution where doubtful additives, impurity exposure, or unclear transformation claims are involved. A very plain milk-and-sugar product may be treated as permissible, but an industrial product with unclear ancillary ingredients should not be assumed halal without verification.

Source matters more than the name. If the ingredient is truly only milk + sugar, it leans permissible. But many Muslims do not buy a ruling on the label name alone. Check for gelatin, collagen, mono- and diglycerides, flavorings, vitamins in oil bases, enzymes, or shared-line contamination. Under the cautious policy, any pork-derived additive is haram, and unspecified gelatin/collagen derivatives are treated as haram unless fish, plant, or certified halal/zabihah source is explicit. Because real-world condensed-milk products can range from simple dairy to more engineered formulations, and because stricter Shafi'i/Hanbali caution remains relevant in doubtful cases, the safest general classification for “condensed milk” without a specific audited product label is MUSHBOOH.
