Overview

Bee honey is a natural sweet substance produced by honeybees from the nectar of flowers. It has been used for thousands of years as both a food and medicine, and holds special significance in Islamic tradition. The Quran dedicates an entire chapter (Surah An-Nahl, meaning "The Bee") to this remarkable creation, explicitly describing honey as containing healing properties for mankind.

Honey is produced by bees (animal source) through a natural enzymatic transformation process. Bees collect nectar from various flowers and plants, then use enzymes in their bodies to convert this nectar into honey, which they store in honeycombs. While the raw material comes from plants, Islamic scholars classify honey as an animal product because it emerges from the bee's body. However, unlike other animal secretions, honey is considered exceptionally pure because it represents a divine transformation rather than simple digestion or excretion.

Islamic Ruling

Hanafi School: Honey is unequivocally halal. The Hanafi scholars consider honey so pure that they require zakat (obligatory charity) to be paid on any amount of honey, without requiring a minimum threshold. This demonstrates honey's status as a valuable and blessed commodity. Honeycomb consumption is also explicitly permitted in Hanafi fiqh.

Maliki School: Pure honey is halal without any reservations. The Maliki school joins the consensus that honey is among the purest foods, mentioned favorably in divine revelation. Like the Hanbali school, they require zakat on honey only after reaching approximately 75.2 kg threshold.

Shafi'i School: Honey is completely halal and recommended. The Shafi'i scholars cite the Quranic verse "therein is healing for men" (Quran 16:69) as evidence that Allah has made honey not just permissible but blessed with medicinal properties. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recommended honey in numerous authentic hadith.

Hanbali School: Honey is halal and carries special blessings. The Hanbali position emphasizes honey's role in prophetic medicine, with authentic narrations showing the Prophet prescribed honey for various ailments. They require zakat on honey once it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold) of approximately 75.2 kg, with one-tenth of the harvest given as charity.

Important Considerations

1. Purity of Source: The honey must be pure and unadulterated. Any additives, flavorings, or processing agents must themselves be halal. Modern honey products sometimes contain alcohol-based extracts, artificial flavors, or gelatin, which would compromise the halal status.

2. Intoxicating Varieties: "Mad honey," produced by bees feeding on certain rhododendron flowers, contains grayanotoxin that causes intoxicating effects. This variety is haram according to Islamic law, which prohibits all intoxicants regardless of their natural origin. The Islamic principle states: "anything that intoxicates is haram."

3. Fermented Honey (Mead): Some scholars permit honey-based drinks like mead if they are non-alcoholic and non-intoxicating. However, fermented honey that produces alcohol becomes haram. The determining factor is whether intoxication results from consumption.

4. Cross-Contamination: Commercial processing must avoid contamination with haram substances. While certification is debated (some scholars argue honey is halal by default and needs no certification), others recommend certification for assurance of processing standards, especially for honey entering Muslim-majority markets.

5. Prophetic Emphasis: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Make use of two cures: honey and the Quran." He also stated when treating a companion's digestive illness, "Allah speaks the truth and your brother's stomach is lying. Go and give him honey to drink." After administration, the patient recovered. This demonstrates honey's blessed status in Islamic tradition.

Quranic Foundation

Surah An-Nahl (16:68-69) states: "And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. Then eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy. There comes forth from their bellies a drink of varying colors wherein is healing for men. Verily in this is indeed a sign for people who think."

This verse establishes honey as a divinely-ordained blessing with medicinal properties, providing the foundation for its halal status across all Islamic schools of thought.
