A humectant is not a single substance but a functional class of food and cosmetic additives whose defining property is the ability to attract and bind water molecules — either from the surrounding environment or from within a product — thereby reducing moisture loss, extending shelf life, and improving texture. The source of a humectant is the single most critical factor for any Islamic ruling — and it is precisely where uncertainty arises:
- Plant origin: Glycerol extracted from vegetable oils (palm, soy, coconut), sorbitol hydrogenated from corn glucose, xylitol from birch wood or corncobs, mannitol from seaweed or corn. These are generally unproblematic.
- Animal origin: Glycerol is frequently a by-product of the soap or biodiesel industry, where animal fats (tallow, including pork lard) are processed. Unless the label specifies "vegetable glycerin" or carries certified halal accreditation, commercial glycerol cannot be assumed to be plant-derived. Similarly, sodium lactate may be produced from cow- or pig-whey fermentation streams.
- Synthetic / petroleum origin: Propylene glycol (E1520) is industrially synthesised from propylene oxide, a petroleum derivative — no animal material is involved in conventional production. Synthetic glycerol also exists.

Shafi'i School (more restrictive — important for Southeast Asian Muslims): Classical Shafi'i jurisprudence — articulated by scholars such as al-Nawawi, al-Shirazi, and al-Sharbini — holds that istihalah does not purify a najis substance except in cases explicitly supported by Prophetic hadith or scholarly consensus (e.g., wine naturally turning into vinegar). A synthetic chemical process, however thorough, does not satisfy this standard in the Shafi'i view. Accordingly, glycerol traced to pork fat or non-zabiha animal fat retains its impure ruling even after industrial refinement. Hanbali School (more restrictive): The Hanbali school closely parallels the Shafi'i position on purity and transformation. Hanbali scholars generally do not permit the istihalah argument to rehabilitate substances derived from prohibited animals. The principle of ihtiyat (precautionary caution) is strongly emphasised: when the source is unknown or mixed, the more restrictive ruling applies.
