Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is a perennial tropical grass belonging to the family Poaceae (Graminaceae). Shafi'i School: According to Shafi'i jurisprudence, sugarcane is halal. The school maintains that plants created by Allah for human benefit are inherently permissible unless evidence exists of prohibition. No such evidence exists for sugarcane.
Hanbali School: The Hanbali madhab also rules sugarcane as halal, consistent with the general principle that vegetation is lawful. The school emphasizes that the default ruling for all foods is permissibility, requiring specific proof to declare something unlawful.
