Shafi'i School: Shafi'i scholars are more conservative. They generally do not accept istihalah as a route to permissibility when the original prohibited substance can be traced — they require the permissibility of the source itself, not merely of the final state. However, Shafi'i scholars would demand explicit verification that no haram processing aids — animal-derived enzymes from non-halal slaughter, ethanol-based carriers, or cross-contaminated equipment — were used in production. Without verified halal certification of the processing chain, a cautious Shafi'i scholar would classify the product as requiring further inquiry.
Hanbali School: The Hanbali position aligns with the Shafi'i school in applying strict scrutiny to processing conditions. Hanbali scholars reject the broader Hanafi/Maliki istihalah exceptions and insist that the halal status of each input — including processing enzymes and manufacturing aids — must be independently established. A Hanbali scholar would treat uncertified wheat fibre (especially when produced in multi-product facilities handling pork or alcohol) as mushbooh until verified. For a product backed by a recognised halal certification body (JAKIM, IFANCA, MUI, HMC, etc.), the Hanbali verdict aligns with HALAL.
Important Considerations
- The ingredient itself is unambiguously plant-based: wheat fibre has no intrinsic haram risk. The halal question is about the process, not the substance.
- Seek certified products: JAKIM, IFANCA, and MUI all certify food-ingredient suppliers, including dietary fibre manufacturers. Certified products have been audited for enzyme sources, cleaning procedures, and equipment sharing.
- Enzyme transparency matters: when a manufacturer discloses that only microbial or fungal enzymes (e.g., Aspergillus niger cellulase) are used, the Shafi'i/Hanbali concern is resolved.
