Islamic Ruling

The permissibility of consuming beef tripe is a matter of significant scholarly disagreement within Islamic jurisprudence, particularly within the Hanafi school of thought:

Hanafi School: There is notable divergence among Hanafi scholars. Some Hanafi jurists classify tripe (ojhri) as makrooh tahreemi (prohibitively disliked/strongly discouraged), reasoning that the stomach serves as a storage organ for waste and feces, similar to the urinary bladder which is prohibited. Classical references like Musjidul Haq cite that Imam Abu Hanifa regarded such organs as "khabeeth" (impure/unclean) things to be avoided. However, other Hanafi authorities, including Darul Uloom Trinidad & Tobago and Darul Ifta Australia, issue fatwas stating that tripe from halal-slaughtered animals is permissible after proper cleaning and preparation, noting that declaring it haram without decisive evidence contradicts general principles.

Maliki School: The majority opinion permits consumption of all parts of a properly slaughtered halal animal, including the stomach lining, provided it is thoroughly cleaned and purified of impurities.

Shafi'i School: Generally permits beef tripe from halal-slaughtered cattle, applying the principle that all parts of permissible animals are lawful unless specifically prohibited by clear textual evidence.

Hanbali School: Follows a similar permissive stance, allowing consumption of tripe from halal animals after proper purification, based on the general Qur'anic permission to eat from sacrificed animals (Surah al-Hajj 22:36).

Important Considerations

1. Source of the Animal Matters: All scholars agree that the animal must be from a halal species (cattle, sheep, goat) and slaughtered according to Islamic guidelines (zabiha). Tripe from non-halal animals or those not properly slaughtered is unquestionably forbidden.

4. Personal Practice and Caution: Given the disagreement, particularly within the Hanafi school, Muslims following Hanafi jurisprudence should consult their local imam or qualified scholar. Those wishing to exercise caution (wara') may choose to avoid tripe entirely, following the stricter Hanafi opinion, while those following other madhahib or the more lenient Hanafi view may consume properly prepared tripe without concern.

5. Cultural and Regional Practices: In many Muslim-majority countries, including parts of the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, tripe dishes are common and widely consumed, reflecting local scholarly acceptance of its permissibility.
