"Natural color" can originate from several fundamentally different kingdoms and categories, each carrying its own halal implications:

Maliki School:
The Maliki school adopts a comparatively more permissive position on insects generally, allowing consumption of those that are not harmful or poisonous (some Maliki scholars permit non-filth-eating insects killed intentionally with the basmalah). Some Maliki scholars have held that insects without flowing blood — like the cochineal scale insect — are not ritually impure and may be permissible. However, this is a minority permissive view and Maliki scholars still classify harmful or unclear-source insects as doubtful. Plant, mineral, and microbial sources under Maliki fiqh are straightforwardly halal.
Shafi'i School:
The Shafi'i school is explicitly restrictive regarding insects. Only locusts (jarad) are permitted, as established by prophetic hadith. All other insects — including the cochineal insect — are considered impure (najis) and haram to consume. Notably, the Shafi'i school also scrutinizes transformation (istihalah) more carefully; a substance derived from an impure source does not become pure through partial chemical processing. Under the Shafi'i position, carmine is haram, and any unspecified "natural color" that could include carmine must be treated with caution or avoided. Most Southeast Asian halal authorities (JAKIM Malaysia, Indonesian LPPOM MUI for non-carmine products) are substantially shaped by Shafi'i-leaning jurisprudence.
Hanbali School:
The Hanbali school likewise prohibits the consumption of insects other than locusts, ruling them impure. Eating and using insect protein or insect-derived extracts in food is not permitted in the Hanbali school. Like the Shafi'i position, carmine is haram, and transformation does not cleanse an intrinsically impure substance. The Turkish Halal Certification body has issued specific guidance (2025) that "insects cannot be used as food or medicine" in accordance with the Hanbali and Shafi'i positions. An unspecified "natural color" therefore cannot be assumed halal under Hanbali fiqh.
Important Considerations
The MUI Dissenting Fatwa (Indonesia): The Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) issued Fatwa No. 33 of 2011 permitting carmine as halal on the basis that: (a) the cochineal insect does not subsist on impure substances, (b) its blood does not flow in the manner of higher animals, making it analogous to locusts in some respects, and (c) the chemical transformation (istihalah) during carmine production sufficiently changes the substance's nature. This remains a minority position globally. JAKIM (Malaysia) and IFANCA (North America) do not accept carmine as halal and require its absence for certification. Products certified by JAKIM, IFANCA, or SANHA will not contain E120.
Processing and Carrier Concerns: Even plant-derived natural colors can raise secondary halal concerns if they are dissolved in ethanol-based carrier solvents, or if their gelatin encapsulation capsules are of porcine or unspecified animal origin (particularly relevant for beta-carotene beadlets in dry applications).
Cosmetics Application: For topical use in cosmetics (lipstick, blush, skincare), many scholars hold that the primary halal concern is whether the product is ingested (e.g., lip products) or merely applied externally. The majority view is that external application of an impure substance is makruh (disliked) rather than haram if no ingestion occurs, but this is disputed and some scholars prohibit it entirely. Halal cosmetic certification bodies require carmine-free formulations regardless.
Practical Guidance: When a product declares only "natural color" or "natural colour" without specifying the source:
1. Seek halal-certified products (JAKIM, IFANCA, MUI, SANHA, HFA).
2. Contact the manufacturer to request the specific colorant identity.
3. Look for E-numbers (E120/E904 = insect-derived; plant/mineral E-numbers = generally safe).
4. In the absence of certification or clarification, cautious Muslims — particularly those following Shafi'i or Hanbali madhabs — should avoid the product.
