Hanbali School: The Hanbali school aligns closely with the Shafi'i school in its caution. Hanbali jurists hold that ingredients of haram or doubtful origin that do not fully transform retain their original ruling — mixing a small amount of a haram substance with a halal substance does not automatically make the whole mixture permissible. Applied to NFDM: if Vitamin D3 is from pork-derived sources and no istihalah is confirmed, the Hanbali position would tend toward haram or mushbooh for that specific product. Like the Shafi'i school, Hanbali scholars would emphasize seeking certified products and exercising precaution when origin is uncertain. The Hanbali ruling for plain, unfortified NFDM from halal animals is HALAL, but commercially fortified versions without certification are MUSHBOOH at best.
Important Considerations
- Vitamin D3 is the leading concern. Commercially fortified NFDM sold in North American and European markets commonly contains Vitamin D3. The source (lanolin vs. pork skin) is typically not disclosed on the label. Products bearing their certification mark can be treated as HALAL with confidence.
- When in doubt, avoid (ihtiyat): All four schools recognize the prophetic principle "leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not" (Tirmidhi). Consumers following the Shafi'i or Hanbali school, or those uncertain about the source of additives, are advised to choose halal-certified NFDM rather than making assumptions.
